Diversity

Lane County is home to numerous ethnic Festivals and Events (including the Asian Celebration, Fiesta Latina, and the Scandinavian Festival,) as well as an ongoing commitment to diversity.   The Eugene and Springfield communities are both members of the Diversity and Human Rights Consortium, and the Latino Business Network (LBN) is a program of the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce.  A number of the city's accessibility attributes are highlighted in this brief overview.

The University of Oregon enrolls students from all over the world.  For the most current census information on permanent residents, please see 2000 Census Data.  It has been said that Eugene residents use the term diversity to describe the citizens' broad range of attitudes.  Education and commitment to the world around is exemplified by successful and well-established Spanish, Japanese, and French Immersion Schools, as well as four respected International High School programs.

The "live and let live" ethic extends to religious tolerance, exemplified by organized Interfaith prayer and reflection.  Since October of 2001, these monthly services have brought people with a common desire to create understanding through worship together.  Each month's theme is selected by a coordinating committee, with representatives from more than 30 faith traditions chosen on a rotating basis.

Mobility International USA is headquartered in Eugene and works to empower people with disabilities around the world to achieve their human rights through international exchange and development.  For almost 40 years, Eugene’s Adaptive Recreation Services has provided a diverse choice of recreation activities to empower area citizens with disabilities to develop active, healthy and playful lifestyles.

The LGBT community is an active part of the region, boasting a long and proud local history.  The Citizens’ Alliance of Lane County, a strong PFLAG chapter, and an HRC office are a sampling of available resources.  The colorful weave of Lane County is comprised of a creative environment, accepting places of worship, inspiring beauty and a nurturing Pacific Northwest lifestyle, creating a diverse cultural complexion.
